About Central Ohio Smooth Jazz

Central Ohio Smooth Jazz is a collaborative effort from the staff and students of Focus Learning Academy of Southwest Columbus.  The streaming radio station is used to keep staff, students and parents informed about the events and important dates surrounding the Focus School-Year. We also keep listeners abreast of community events and in and around the South/Central Columbus, Ohio area. The station is produced through the Focus Media Arts Department as a means of teaching students audio production, as well as contributing to a student’s academic goals with literacy.

About Focus Learning Academy

Focus Schools are state-funded charter schools that help teens and young adults, ages Freshman – 22, earn their high school diploma while preparing for the workforce or their aspirations of higher education. Focus has three locations in Columbus – Focus North High School, Focus Learning Academy Southeast and Focus Learning Academy Southwest.  All three schools have a state rating of “Exceeds Expectations” and the managing company, e-School Consulants, is one of only two (out of 38 charter management companies in the State of Ohio) to earn 4-points – the top 5% – from the state for school academics. While our schools are defined as “charter” schools, we operate as part of the public school system in Central Ohio and we offer enrollment to interested students tuition free.

You can learn more about each campus by visiting FocusLearn.org

All three schools are staffed with certified and highly qualified teachers that use atypical classroom settings to meet the learning style of each student. Students are able to engage in teacher-led instruction, online course work or complete hard-copy packets of standards based curriculum. Students have the freedom to guide their own progress, under the watchful eye of certified teachers. As DOPR (Drop out Prevention and Recovery) schools, this freedom offers those who have had negative experiences with the stand-and-deliver modality of traditional schools, a new experience of engaging in learning that meets their individual needs.

Focus is FREE and our unique structure offers our students a choice in courses, accommodates self-paced studies, allows for students to earn a living while attending school and prepares them for further education.

The first public charter school law was passed by the Ohio General Assembly in 1997. Since that time, these publicly funded, tuition-free schools have provided unique educational opportunities for hundreds of thousands of students. Charter schools are an important part of Ohio’s system of K-12 public education and the choice of countless parents seeking the best learning opportunities for their children.
